Geno is involved in research programs involving animal breeding, quantitative
genetics and molecular genetics in close cooperation with the Norwegian University
of Life Science, Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and other research institutes.
Geno is involved in research regarding development of improved statistical methods for genetic analyses and genetic evaluation, studies of genetic associations between traits, documentation of genetic trends in Norwegian Red, more effective use of available data, possibilities for including new traits or trait definitions in the breeding program.
Genetic trends for Norwegian Red show that selection for increased production and improved animal health and fertility can be obtained simultaneously, if the breeding objective is properly defined, and if the breeding program is designed to include selection for traits with low heritability. Genetic improvement for mastitis resistance and fertility in Norwegian Red has been documented in several scientific articles published in Journal of Dairy Science (http://jds.fass.org/).
